A wealth of experience, within Jones Bros’ head office, has already been gained in her first three years with the company, by health and safety team member, Meriel Evans.

Meriel joined the company to help introduce a business-wide management software system.

After the system had been established, she combined a part-time role in purchase ledger alongside answering the reducing amount of software queries, before progressing into health and safety.

Meriel is now the Jones Bros HSEQ (health, safety, environment and quality) administrator.

In addition, the company is now supporting Meriel as she studies for a diploma unconnected to her work, but which has been a long-held personal ambition, by allowing her to drop from a five to four-day week to go to college.

Meriel’s role includes recording site incidents, site inspections and other Health and Safety reports as well as organising occupation health surveilance and drug and alcohol testing for the company.

Meriel also helps out on the recruitment side for the business, supporting the HR department in organising the annual careers’ event and work experience week.

A native of Pentrefoelas, Meriel studied for A levels in IT, psychology, media and the Welsh Baccalaureate in the sixth form at Brynhyfryd School, Ruthin.

She then went to Harper Adams University, Shropshire, where she gained a degree in business management and marketing.

Upon graduation, Meriel was appointed by Jones Bros to help train staff in new business management software being introduced company-wide.

After 18 months, Meriel was appointed to her current health and safety role.

Meriel said: “As well as keeping health and safety records for all the sites up to date, I have recently started auditing business processes within the company.

“I went on a training course at the end of 2016, and have just started conducting audits.

“So far I’ve carried them out in the tendering, training and commercial departments.

“In this role, I also get to help with the recruitment side, for example by helping to market the careers’ event and work experience week.”

She added:
