Jones Bros has completed its latest project for FCC Environment, a project worth more than £3m to create a new material recycling facility in Oxfordshire.

The MRF building in Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire, will see general waste from local homes collected on site and sifted to ensure recyclable materials are separated and saved from landfill.

Work on the project began in late 2011, when Jones Bros prepared the former silt lagoon site by excavating 105,000m3 of earthworks to a depth of 5m.

A further 120,000m3 of engineered clay was then used to fill in the void, comprising 500mm layers for the bottom 3m followed by 250mm layers on top.

A 750mm thick mechanically stabilised layer was then constructed, topped by a 200mm thick hardstanding concrete area measuring 7,000m2.

The 4,550sq m steel framed building features a 2.8m deep concrete pit to accommodate a waste conveyor belt and a total of 260m of reinforced concrete push walls, ranging from 3.2m to 5m in height, as well as office and welfare facilities.

Sutton Courtenay is also the location of one of Jones Bros’ regional offices, which opened in May 2011 after the company was awarded a three-year waste management contract by FCC Environment.
