Rebeca wants to inspire as part of International Women’s Day celebrations 8th Mar 2024
Rebeca Jones is proud to be helping dispel gender stereotypes in her role at Jones Bros.
And as International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8 March, Rebeca believes that more and more females should see the world of civil engineering as a viable career path.
The quantity surveyor said: “It’s great to work for a civil engineering contractor, especially one that creates the perfect atmosphere for women to succeed.
“People often look at construction and engineering as male-dominated environments where you must be tough to thrive, but that’s not the case.
“There are plenty of avenues to go down within those sectors and everyone – male or female – can find something that suits their skillset and passion.”
Seeing is believing, Rebeca continuing: “I feel as though the opportunities within the sector do need highlighting and explaining to young girls.
“There are plenty of career choices for women, whether that is out on site, or office-based work.”
Prior to joining Jones Bros on a permanent basis in December 2022, Rebeca had spent time on a work placement with the company as a teenager – visiting Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm .
After graduating from Liverpool John Moores University with a degree in quantity surveying, a two-year spell with a consultancy firm followed before she realised the path she wanted to take meant returning to the Ruthin-headquartered contractor.
“I enjoy being out on site and working for a contractor has helped me increase that aspect of my role,” said Rebeca.
“I am interested in the whole process of how things are built, from the tender opportunity to construction, and Jones Bros allows me to follow that passion.
“I remember visiting the wind farm as part of my work placement at a time when I wasn’t 100 per cent sure what to do going forward.
“After that I decided to pursue quantity surveying, and having graduated, I started working for a company which was involved in the Caernarfon and Bontnewydd bypass build.
“Jones Bros was one of the parties of that joint venture, so our paths crossed again. Having grown up just outside Ruthin and constantly seeing the green vans everywhere, it felt right to work for them.”
It is a decision that Rebeca is glad she made, adding: “It’s a wonderful company and the entire team are friendly and helpful.
“I knew a few people from my time working alongside Jones Bros and it’s exactly how I expected it to be with everyone offering support and advice.
“It’s great to be surrounded by Welsh speakers and be part of what feels like a family.”
Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.
The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways , flood and marine defence , waste management and renewable energy around the UK.
The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced nearly 40 per cent of its current workforce, with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited more than 100 apprentices during the past three years.
