Sian’s safety expertise earns RoSPA award recognition 20th Mar 2024

Sian Deane’s excellence in her field has been recognised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) .

The Jones Bros health and safety advisor was part of the three-strong female shortlist nominated for the Inspiring Women in Safety award.

The honour acts as a beacon of recognition for excellence in practices, promoting a culture of diligence, and responsibility across diverse sectors.

Sian said: “I was like, ‘why is my name in this?’ I just laughed when I read about being shortlisted for such as prestigious prize.

“It is great to be namechecked for doing your job, as it proves you are doing what you should be and helping maintain high standards of health and safety.”

On the award’s importance, Sian added: “It’s wonderful to recognise the females that are in the industry because it isn’t always easy in a male-dominated environment.

“That appreciation provides a boost for all of us that are flying the flag.”

At the awards night, Sian was praised for demonstrating exceptional commitment to her role and serving as an exemplary figure in promoting safety.

She is currently working on North Kyle Wind Farm , a £300 million 49-turbine scheme near Dalmellington, Scotland, which will have the capacity to power more than 160,000 households.

“It’s a really interesting project to be a part of as there is plenty of heavy plant and a lot of people – around 150 to 180 – working here,” said Sian.

“I’ve worked across a variety of developments, including wind farms, quarries, landfill, and coastal defence, and each one provides an opportunity to learn and refine your skills.”

Mike Jolley, senior health, safety, and environment manager at Jones Bros, said: “Sian’s place on the shortlist for the Inspiring Women in Safety award is richly deserved.

“Us at Jones Bros are lucky to have her as part of our highly skilled and dedicated workforce.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways , flood and marine defence , waste management and renewable energy around the UK.

The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced nearly 40 per cent of its current workforce, with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited more than 100 apprentices during the past three years.
